American Mardy Fish defeated his second consecutive French opponent at the WTA and ATP Miami Masters on Sunday, adding Richard Gasquet to a victim's list that also includes Julien Benneteau.

Fish, who has been treating a thyroid condition since the Australian Open, dispatched Gasquet 6-4, 6-3 at Crandon Park.

Fish, seeded 14th, may have a special role to play at this edition as the highest-ranked American left in the draw after the elimination of defending champion Andy Roddick, who will drop from the top 10 in the next ATP rankings.

Home events have been to Fish's liking, with the right-hander reaching semi-finals in Memphis and Delray Beach in February. The victory lifted Fish to 11-9 at Miami while Gasquet stands 2-6 at the venue.

"It's very important to sort of stay the course against someone like him, try to neutralise his best shot, which is his backhand crosscourt, and then try to take your shots from there," Fish said.

The American next faces either Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro, the 2009 US Open winner, or Swedish fourth seed Robin Soderling, a two-time Roland Garros finalist.

Fish advanced in 91 minutes with eight aces and three breaks of serve to reach the fourth round.

In other matches, Spanish sixth seed David Ferrer ended the dream run of India's Somdev Devvarman 6-4, 6-2 while Kevin Anderson beat Spain's Pablo Andujar 6-2, 6-3.

Three women's seeds and a former number one all advanced into the fourth round, with fifth-seeded French Open champion Francesca Schiavone beating Llourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain 6-4, 7-6 (7/2).
